Car batteries naturally degrade over time, meaning their performance gradually declines until they finally need to be replaced. Neglected car batteries can become unreliable and cause several inconveniences, like making your Chevrolet refuse to start. To avoid finding yourself in a situation like this, conduct regular battery maintenance to have information about the battery's health.
If your battery is old, you may want to have it replaced. Car batteries last up to five years; hence, if yours is past this lifespan, you may want to replace it. However, before you buy a new battery, check the voltage level; healthy batteries often record voltage levels of at least 12.6.
One common sign that your car battery is dying is when you hear a clicking sound whenever you turn the key in the ignition. Batteries get things going by sending electrical current to the starter solenoid. Dying batteries cannot effectively perform this function, leading to a weaker electrical current sent to the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid, in return, makes a clicking sound if it receives insufficient or reduced electrical current. Another sign that your battery is dying is when there is a slow crank.
Before you jump your Chevrolet battery, ensure both cars are ready. Then, get jumper cables with four sets of alligator clips. Next, start the engine with a good battery and let it run for around two minutes. Then, start the vehicle with the dead battery and let it recharge, allowing it to run for two minutes. Finally, remove the jumper cables and drive the resurrected vehicle for half an hour so that it can recover. Note that the wires should be removed in reverse order.
